The Milk House

The Milk House was built in 1849 to support the Shakers' dairy operation. A trough, on the lowest floor of the building, was fed with cool well water. Filled containers were placed in the cool water to help preserve the milk.

After years of disuse and disrepair, the building is in great need of stabilization before it deteriorates further, requiring yet more work.

In November of 2022, Maggie Viverito donated $18,000 in memory of her mother Claire Viverito for Milk House restoration. It became the foundation of our Milk House Fund. Since then it has continued to grow, thanks to our members' kind donations, to just over $28,000. This will allow us to begin the work of stabilizing the Milk House.
